The Cozy Apple Crumble
There’s something about apple crumble that feels like a hug in dessert form — warm apples bubbling beneath a golden, buttery topping that’s crisp on the outside and soft underneath. It’s one of those timeless recipes that never goes out of style, perfect for cozy evenings, family gatherings, or when you just need a little comfort on a chilly day.
In fact, it’s such a favourite in our home that my husband insists on it whenever apple crumble season comes around. He loves it so much we’ve actually found ourselves planning lighter dinners the day before and the day of, just so there’s plenty of room left for dessert. That first spoonful of soft apples and crunchy crumble is always worth saving space for.

Tips for Making the Best Apple Crumble
- Use Granny Smith apples – Their tartness balances the sweetness of the crumble and keeps the filling perfectly firm.
- Dice apples evenly – Uniform pieces cook consistently and create a perfect texture.
- Spice it up (optional) – Cinnamon (and a pinch of nutmeg if you like) gives that cozy, warm flavour.
- Make the crumble topping buttery and crumbly – Use cold butter mixed into flour and sugar, rubbed lightly with your fingers or a pastry cutter.
- Layer well – Spread the apples evenly and cover with a generous crumble topping for the perfect balance of juicy fruit and crunch.
- Bake until golden and bubbling – Look for a golden-brown top and bubbling edges; that’s your cue it’s ready.

How to Serve Apple Crumble
- Serve warm or cold – Apple crumble is delicious straight from the oven, but it’s also lovely after it cools. Personally, I think it depends on the weather: warm and cozy on chilly days, or chilled and refreshing on warmer ones.
- Slightly cooled – Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to firm up slightly; the topping stays crisp while the apples remain tender.
- Add toppings – For extra indulgence, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of custard, or a dollop of whipped cream.
- Portioning – Spoon directly from the baking dish or pre-portion into individual ramekins for a pretty presentation.

How to Store Apple Crumble
- Room temperature – If you plan to eat it within a day, cover the crumble loosely with foil or plastic wrap and keep it on the counter.
- Refrigerator – Store in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days. Reheat in the oven to bring back the crisp topping, or enjoy cold if you prefer.
- Freezer – Apple crumble freezes well. Portion it into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the oven before serving.
- Reheating tips – To maintain a crisp topping, reheat in a preheated oven at 175°C (350°F) for 10–15 minutes rather than using a microwave.
In our house, apple crumble never even makes it to the freezer — it’s always gone in a heartbeat! But if you happen to have some leftovers, don’t worry; it stores well in the fridge or freezer and can be enjoyed later.
